Commonly I recommend .Com or local or .org

Definitely, it will slight help to get high rank in the SERPs, if you are targeting any specific country. For example... Let say, you are targeting UK with the domain ext. .uk then it can be easy for you to get high rank than others. 

But at the same time it also limits on ability of getting rank Globally.

And this is one of the 200+ factors which decide rank in google. 🙂

Your domain name extension matters a lot. You must have an appropriate domain extension.

Usually business websites have .com extension. A university having a .com website will not look trustful.

Also, it can impact your traffic. You might have heard about Darren Rowse from ProBlogger. He migrated his blog from ProBlogger.net to ProBlogger.com, because his first time visitors couldn't remember .net extension and they were searching .com extension. He lost a lot of traffic.

So, right domain extension matters.
